GENEROUS BEET?

The name of the street I live on is terrible.

BENARES.

I think I have an annoyance with my street name because it's such a hassle to say on the phone. Whenever anybody asks for my street name, I swear to you (I am NOT kidding), I feel my body sink because I know that I will have to SPELL out the street name and repeat the way I feel it is supposed to be pronounced.

"Okay, where do we mail your order?"

"xxxxx Benares Street."

This is where I think, she's going to say "what?"

"Okay, what was that?"

"Benares Street," I say, throwing a noose over my neck, "B-E-N-A-R-E-S."

"Hold please."

"BEN-AR-ES STREET."

"Okay, that was Generous Beet?"

It's SUCH an annoyance. Why couldn't our street have been named, oh, JOHNSON ROAD or HEAVEN AVENUE or CLEARLY SPOKEN DRIVE?

Benares. Gag me.
