(IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY) MEET AVISHAI COHEN

This whole week I have been hooked on bassist/composer Avishai Cohen. I don't know how this guy slipped through my radar; he's got a track record playing with Chick Corea and Jeff Ballard, among countless others.

This track, "Nu Nu #1" really tests your ability to focus on agenda. There is massive pay-off at 5:50-end following the piano feature (which is brilliant, but quite alienating) and it just makes that brewing suspense all worth it.

I don't think anything stimulates my mind more than flowing with a seemingly-out-of-pocket groove (it's tight, and yet realllly uneven). It's like flying. And it often makes me laugh. A lot. In short, I cannot wait until this guy comes to town.

A phone call.
*ring-ring*

THE GIRLFRIEND: Wanna bone?

HUGO: Can't; writing some new music for the new project.

THE GIRLFRIEND: Oh yeah? What's it sound like?

HUGO: [this] and [that]. But then I get distracted with pop/soul stuff and then the jazz stuff and I end up playing "My Cherie Amour" into Jill Scott into Circa Survive into "Maiden Voyage."

THE GIRLFRIEND: Oy.

HUGO: I really feel good about this new stuff, but I don't want to let all that past great stuff go to waste.

THE GIRLFRIEND: Then why not just do them all?
Duh.

Girls may be stupid 99% of the time, but that other 1% of the time ...genius.
