MASTER CLASS

Musicians, heads up.

That's right. The new live Beyonce album ...with a coinciding instrumentals-only album of the same show.

Want to feel like a really shitty musician? Listen to these back-to-back for a couple days. I did, and boy is my artistic self-esteem at a new low. It's fucking in-sane how good these players are. Almost as good as Timberlake's backing group for his FutureSex/LoveSounds tour.

I always tell people to not dismiss a pop musician until they're in a live environment with a massive live group, so that they can hear seemingly simple/"stupid" songs in the context of very meticulous arrangements. Live music directors have a unique talent in their ability to turn relatively boring radio music into huge and lush orchestral spectacles. That polarity is fascinating in live music, and likely the core reason that live music means so much to me.

Fig. A: Ignore the lip-syncing little girl. Listen to this arrangement.

Idea: Tell-all book with stories from session musicians who've backed huge pop stars from 1990-present.
