'FRIGHT NIGHT' BY ARIEL PINK'S HAUNTED GRAFFITI

I avoided listening to Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti because, during my days as a rock journalist, their PR would rape my inbox on a daily basis. Their PR were, at the least, very persistent motherfuckers whose persistence turned me off, thus I never gave them a chance. I drew the line when they started sending gifts. Like, um, hellooOOOOooo, I raised my hand and took an OATH in COLLEGE.

Anyway, BIG MISTAKE. They're fucking RAD. I don't know who they are (nor do I care) except for the fact that they've adopted really old school production techniques and songwriting styles from late-'70s/early-'80s psych pop records.

Seeing their name on the Coachella line-up sealed the deal. "Fuck it," I said, "If they're good enough to be on the bill, then, cha, I'll give it a listen."

And their track "Fright Night" has been played a total of 98 times since Sunday. It's my favorite off their latest LP. That synth! Those chords! That snare! That Spandau Ballet bass! That deliberate groove that also sounds like it doesn't give a fuck! That vocal execution! THE SOUND EFFECTSSS!!! *swwwoooOOOOOooosshh*

First time I heard it, I gave an audible, "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT" and my colleagues were like, "GAWD HUGO CAN YOU JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT MUSIC FOR ONE MINUTE GAWDAMMNIT GAWDD."

And then I'm like "I DUNNO ¯\(°_o)/¯"
